AI is changing how websites are designed. That is not necessarily a bad thing. For designers and developers, AI can speed up research, generate ideas, create layouts, write code and help solve problems that once took hours to work through manually. For small businesses, it can also make professional-looking websites more accessible. The problem starts when AI in web design becomes the designer rather than a tool used by the designer. I’ve seen this happen while designing websites. The result is what I call design drift.

What is design drift?

Design drift is the gradual loss of a website’s original brand, purpose and personality as generic or AI-generated design decisions replace deliberate human choices. It doesn’t usually happen in one dramatic redesign. It happens through small decisions: an AI-generated hero section here, a familiar card layout there, generic copy, stock-style imagery and animations that look impressive but don’t tell visitors anything distinctive about the business. Someone then asks AI to “make it look more modern”. Each individual decision might seem reasonable. Put them together and the website can end up looking like hundreds of other websites.

AI in web design is good at patterns

This is where AI becomes both useful and dangerous.

AI is exceptionally good at recognising patterns. Show it thousands of business websites and it can quickly identify the structures, layouts and components that appear again and again.

That makes AI useful for generating ideas, exploring layouts and speeding up repetitive design work.

But there is a catch.

But a pattern that performs well across thousands of websites is not automatically the right pattern for your business.

AI might recommend:

  • A large hero heading
  • A short paragraph underneath
  • Three service cards
  • Customer testimonials
  • A call-to-action button
  • A logo strip
  • An FAQ section
  • A large footer

There is nothing inherently wrong with that structure. In fact, it may be exactly what a particular website needs. The problem starts when they appear because “AI suggested it” rather than because they help the person using the website.

For one business, that might mean putting pricing information near the top of the page. For another, it might mean showing completed projects before explaining the services. A local trade business may need trust signals, service areas and proof of experience much earlier than a software company would.

The structure should follow the customer journey, not the pattern.

That’s the difference between using AI as a design tool and letting AI make the design decisions.

AI can reproduce what is common.

Good web design works out what is appropriate.

A good designer needs to bridge the two.

The danger of every website looking “AI-designed”

AI isn’t making web design worse. It’s making mediocre design easier to reproduce. AI should accelerate design exploration, not replace the reasoning behind a design decision. Yet widespread use of the same AI tools can produce the opposite result. You can see it in the visual language.

  • Large typography.
  • Minimal layouts.
  • Soft gradients.
  • Floating interfaces.
  • Glass effects.
  • Rounded containers.
  • Subtle shadows.
  • Stock-style AI imagery.
  • Generic conversational copy.

The problem with generic AI-generated design isn’t that it looks bad; it’s that it can make a business look interchangeable.

A building company should not necessarily look like a SaaS platform. A veterinary clinic should not necessarily look like a fintech company. A local tradie does not need the same visual language as a global technology company.

Good web design starts with context: the business, its customers, its industry, its brand and the action the website needs users to take.

AI should support the designer, not replace the thinking

There is a useful way to think about AI in web design: Use AI for acceleration, not authorship.

AI can help with research and content organisation, early design concepts, wireframe ideas, UX brainstorming, accessibility checks, code generation, content variations, image concepts, repetitive development tasks, and testing different approaches.

But the designer still needs to make the important decisions.

  • Does this make sense for the user?
  • Does this represent the brand?
  • Is the information easy to understand?
  • Does the design help someone take the next step?
  • Does it work on a phone?
  • Does it load quickly?
  • Does it meet accessibility expectations?
  • Does it build trust?

Those questions cannot be answered simply by making another prompt.

How to prevent AI design drift

If you are using AI during a website project, there are several practical ways to keep the work grounded.

1. Start with the brand

Document the things that should not change. Your personality, audience, positioning, visual identity, tone of voice and reasons customers choose you should all influence the design.

2. Define the user journey

Do not ask AI to “design a modern homepage” without context. Define what visitors need to understand and what you want them to do next. The design should follow that journey.

3. Use real business information

Generic prompts produce generic results. Feed the process with real customer questions, genuine services, actual project experience, industry knowledge and authentic photographs. The more grounded the input, the more useful the output can become.

4. Question the first result

AI-generated work should be a starting point. Do not accept the first layout simply because it looks polished. Ask what problem each section solves. If there is no good answer, remove it.

5. Keep a human in the loop

Someone with real knowledge of the business should review the final website. AI can generate an answer. It cannot take responsibility for whether that answer is appropriate for your customers.

The future of AI in web design isn’t less human

I do not think AI is going to make good web designers irrelevant. I think it will make good judgement more valuable. As AI makes production faster, the difference between websites will increasingly come from the thinking behind them. Anyone can ask AI for a website. The harder part is knowing what the website actually needs to say, what it should feel like, what should be left out and why a customer should believe what they are reading. That is where experience still counts. AI in web design can absolutely make websites better. But only when it is used to strengthen the thinking behind the design rather than replace it. The goal shouldn’t be to make websites that look like they were made with AI. The goal should be to use AI to make better websites that still feel like they were made for real people.
